LEGAL REPRESENTATION
- According to the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS) out of 72,772 inmates; 51,384 are awaiting trail (2021)
- Most prisons in Nigeria were built during the colonial era and very little change. Nigeria's biggest prison Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison was constructed for 956 inmates, today it occupies over 3.000 prisoners.
MENTAL HEALTH AND REHABILITATION
- The current penal system is failing to rehabilitate inmates , instead, it is hardening already hardened criminals and breeding frustrated individuals
- With an overpopulated prison system, majority of prisoners don't have the necessary psychotherapy required to help deal with mental health & behavioral problems.
- "A HUNGRY MAN IS AN ANGRY SOUL" - With more people also means more mouths to feed. With insufficient funds available, it is estimated that a measly sum of NGN450 (-$0.70) is spent on each prisoner per day
